If the leather is too thick in certain places, thin it with a leather skiver tool or french edge tool. Use a leather hole punch for leather so you can place rivets, grommets, eyelets and snaps in before you use setter tools. Oblong hole punches are used for buckles.

A tree stump makes a good firm workbench for punching holes and setting hardware on. In the video, we used a piece of scrap leather as a cutting pad under our leather project when punching holes. You could also use a poly cutting board or poly cutting board instead of a piece of scrap leather to protect the sharp ends of your punches.
